Understanding Basic Web Concepts PDF Print E-mail
Not everyone is truly up to date when it comes to the Basic Web Concepts.  Many do not have a clue as to what a web even is.  All they really know is that they turn on their computer enter a few words into a web browser and off they go.  It is time to begin a journey of mutual understanding.  We will not dwell into the complicated Internet language that only births frustration.  We will keep it simple and easy to comprehend.

The web is nothing more than a group of computers that are interconnected and transferring data to one another.  Most computers on the web are supported by ‘data-transfer mechanisms’.  These are typically cable lines, phone lines and digital satellite signals.  You can break it down like this.  All data-transfer mechanisms really do is move information from point A to point B.
Computers that make up the web are on board twenty- four hours a day.  They are referred to as ‘servers’.  These computers are basically the same as any normal computer except that they are designed with special ‘server’ software.  Server software works for the computer like a telephone information operator works for the phone.  When you call information looking for something the operator directs you there.  When information is entered into a web browser the server software immediately directs you to the requested website.

The server software is able to locate a website by utilizing the URL.  A URL is nothing more than the address of the website.  This is typically something like www.findme.com.  Therefore, if a website wants to be found it has to have an address.  To get an official address a domain name must be registered.  Once you register your domain name on the web it becomes just like your personal address at home.  It cannot be duplicated.  It is yours and yours alone.

Registering a domain name is not free.  You will have to pay a few dollars in order to own than unique website address for a period of time.  Normally you can register a name from 1 to 10 years.  You can spend anywhere from 10USD to 30USD a year to do so.  The main reason that you have to pay a fee is because all of the addresses on the World Wide Web have to be continually updated.  As with any job someone has to be paid to accomplish this.  That is where your fee goes.  Therefore, when you click on that browser and it starts questioning the servers, the servers go to that huge address book and pull up the website address.  That is how it works.
